Benahavis is a quaint town in Andalusia with narrow winding streets and an old world look. The Spanish town is known for its high-class restaurants, as many visitors come to Benahavis explicitly for the cuisine. Benahavis is located seven kilometres inland from the gorgeous Guadalmina golf course and stands 500 meters above sea level.
Among the main attractions are the ruins of the 11th century castle Montemayor. This castle was an Arab stronghold when the Moors ruled the area. The castle is located on top of a mountain, which offers fantastic views of the surrounding coastline. Another attraction is the tiny village of La Aldea, which lies within Benahavis. This picturesque village was the idea of the British sculptor David Marshall, who has a gallery in the village. La Aldea has marble fountains, grilles, and many antiques and intricate old-fashioned doors.
Besides the many classy restaurants in Benahavis, there are quite a few other places to eat. There are many bars that serve fantastic tapas and there is even a small pizzeria, where the old Arab stone walls have been converted into a restaurant. Once you are in Benahavis, you will know you are in the culinary centre of Andalusia. If you come to Benahavis, it is suggested that you come with an appetite; with the many culinary choices, you will definitely not leave hungry or disappointed.
The areas around Benahavis are quickly growing, but it has not changed the village. Since parking is sparse, it is recommended that you park outside the village and visit it on foot. You can also drive to the Restaurante Los Faroles on calle Málaga where there is an inexpensive car park. During the tourist season, the area is well visited and with good reason.
