On stepping onto the island of Lanzarote the 4th largest island in the canaries, you could beforgiven for thinking that you had stepped onto another planet! Lanzarote has a volcanic past but it’s has been relatively recent with activity in both the 18th and 19th centuries, as such there are very few trees and green areas. Many areas of theland are still covered in ash and lava, but this also provides some of the most fertile soil in the world and the land provides home to many plants fruits and vegetables. The region of Geria is home to some spectacular vineyards nestled in between to large craters. The vines are grown in funnels of clinker each of which is surrounded by a low wall. The clinker collects the moisture and dew, the funnel then directs it towards the vines.

The low level hotels keep the architecture aesthetically pleasing and much of the landscape is preserved. The island’s charm is created by a combination of the moon like landscape volcanic in nature, the tranquil life of the residents, the Atlantic sea and the friendly acceptance of tourists to the island.
Touristy hotspots include Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen, which are biosphere reservation protected by the UNESCO. The south of the island is very dry and sparsely populated. However its beaches are stunning and as such very popular especially around EL Papagayo. Other popular tourist spots are Puerto del Carmen and Costa de Teguise and of course the capital of Lanzarote, Arrecife.
