Gibraltar Property for sale
As it looms in the distance,
an imposing, scraggy silhouette in the west, the Rock as it is
affectionately known, lures daily visitors to Gibraltar, famous
worldwide as being the gateway to the Mediterranean Sea. Imposing
but small, Gibraltar covers under 6 sqkm and
is inhabited by approx 30,000 people of nationalities Gibraltarians, Brits, Spanish, Indians, Jews and Moroccans to name a few.
The quickest and most comprehensive way to sample Gibraltar’s history and
spectacular views is to take a 90 minute, official rock tour, taking in the attractions
such as Saint Michael’s Caves, a unique hall of crystallized nature thought
to have been inhabited in Neolithic times. The Great Siege Tunnels (excavated during
the Great Siege of 1779-83 to permit the mounting of a gun on the north face
and form an impregnable line of artillery) and Ape’s Den, a chance to be
photographed with the colony of famous Barbary Macaque monkeys, the only ones
in Europe to run free in a semi-wild state. For the more adventurous, a cable
car can be taken to the top of the Rock for spectacular 360º vistas.
Due to its unique location, the Gibraltar Bay and straights have the added advantage
of being home to Dolphins and Whales and they are a sight not to be missed when
visiting the Rock with tours leaving on a daily basis from the Marina. Gibraltar’s
three marinas – Sheppard’s Marina, Marina Bay and Queensway Quay
Marina cater for all types of vessels and have a lively range of bars and waterfront
restaurants whilst typical pubs and fast-food houses are found in the centre
of town.A colourful multicultural mixture of local shops and British department
stores set within colonial style buildings, Main Street, is the central shopping
area. Gibraltar’s reputation as a tax-free shopping haven means there are
plenty of bargains to be had from alcohol and tobacco to chic perfume. British
Home Stores and Marks and Spencers also provide a little taste of Britain.
Travelling around Gibraltar is relatively easy, there are local bus routes, which
run at approximately 15-minute intervals and cover most of the tourist attractions,
as well as taxis, though most central places can be walked to. Gibraltar holds
a Guinness World Record for having a public airport closest to the city centre.
The airport is serviced by British Airways and Monarch Crown Service, who operate
flights to Luton, Gatwick and Manchester.
In Gibraltar, memories of its historical past are an intrinsic part of its present
and its close proximity to Spain make it an ideal place for a day out, hop across
the border and take step back into the unique heritage that the Rock has to offer.
